12 Things to Purge from your Kitchen Before the Holidays

As the holiday season approaches, your kitchen is about to become the most-used room in the house — baking, cooking, hosting, reheating leftovers at midnight… it's all happening here. Before the chaos kicks off, now is the perfect time to clear some space and simplify your setup. Here are 12 things to ditch now so you can focus on what matters most: food, family, and not losing your mind when you can’t find the gravy boat.
Coffee Mugs You Don’t Actually Use
That “funny” mug from 2015? The chipped one you keep meaning to toss? Be honest about which mugs you reach for every day — and donate the rest.
Water Bottles You Didn’t Buy (and Never Use)
Freebies, swag bottles, leaky lids — if you didn’t choose it and don’t use it, it doesn’t deserve shelf space.
Mismatched or Lidless Plastic Containers
Nothing slows you down like digging for a lid that doesn't exist. Recycle the mismatched, stained, or warped containers and invest in a fresh, functional set. I always store my lids attached to it's container so you know right away when something is missing!
Small Appliances You’ve Never (or Rarely) Used
The waffle maker you used once, the smoothie blender gathering dust — if it hasn’t earned its spot on your counter or in your cabinet this year, it's time to rehome it.
Duplicate Tools & Utensils
You don’t need three garlic presses, five spatulas, or two can openers. Pick your favorites and donate the rest to someone who could use them.
Expired Pantry & Baking Staples
Spices lose their flavor. Baking powder loses its power. Check expiration dates on your essentials and replace anything that's past its prime — your cookies will thank you.
Worn-Out Dish Towels & Sponges
Towels that are stained, fraying, or just plain sad? Time to let them go. Same goes for funky-smelling sponges — no one wants holiday dishes cleaned with that.
Extra Vases & Random Glassware
If you’re not using that collection of vases, mismatched wine glasses, or souvenir pint glasses — clear them out. Keep only what you love and use.
Entertaining Items You’ve Never Used (Even During Holidays)
That fondue set you thought would be fun? The extra gravy boat? If it hasn’t made an appearance in past holidays, chances are it won’t this year either.
Takeout Condiment Packets & Sauce Hoards
Soy sauce, ketchup packets, hot sauce minis — toss anything that's been lurking in your drawers longer than your last relationship.
Forgotten Freezer Food
You’re going to need freezer space for cookie dough and make-ahead meals. Clear out the freezer-burned mystery meat and long-forgotten leftovers now.
Chipped or Damaged Dishes
Whether it’s a cracked plate or a glass with a nicked rim, damaged dishware is unsafe. Let them go before guests arrive.
Decluttering your kitchen now will make holiday prep feel lighter, faster, and way less stressful. Plus, you’ll actually be able to find what you need — which is a gift in itself. So grab a donation box, crank your favorite fall playlist, and start making space for the magic ahead.
