Cluttered Kitchen Counters? Here's 7 Things to Declutter

The kitchen often becomes one of the most cluttered areas in the home, especially in the South, where it serves as the heart of family life. Since we spend so much time here, it’s only natural that things can get a bit chaotic. With the holidays quickly approaching we want to streamline meal prep and cleanup in order to spend more time with our families. Here are my tips to clear off your kitchen counters.

Tackle the Mail

Mail and school papers can quickly pile up on the kitchen counters. Create a designated spot for these items to keep them organized and out of the way. I use simple magazine holders to sort my mail into two categories: “Needs Attention” and “To Be Filed.” I handle the “Needs Attention” pile weekly and file documents once a month. Regularly tossing junk mail and unimportant papers will help keep your counters clear.

Organize Cooking Tools

If your drawers are overflowing and utensils are spilling onto the counter, it might be time to declutter. Start by grouping all your cooking tools into categories. Check for duplicates and worn-out items, and purge what you don’t need. Aim to store everything neatly in a drawer to free up counter space.

Designate Spots for Condiments and Spices

Keep your spices, cooking oils, and condiments organized by designating a specific spot for them. Whether it’s a cabinet near the stove or a dedicated shelf in the pantry, make sure to put these items away after each use. If cabinet space is tight, a lazy Susan next to the stove can help you keep frequently used items easily accessible. I keep essentials like salt, pepper, and olive oil on mine for convenience.

Manage Snack Storage

If snacks have taken over your kitchen, it might be time to clean out your pantry. Dedicate a shelf or drawer specifically for snacks, and use baskets on the pantry floor for extra storage if needed. If space is still a problem, consider buying less to fit your available space.

Reevaluate Small Appliances

Take a look at the small appliances on your counter. If you have items like a juicer or blender that you rarely use, consider storing them away. Keep frequently used appliances easily accessible, but put away those that aren't used daily to clear up counter space.

Store Cookbooks Elsewhere

If you use cookbooks regularly but don’t want them cluttering your countertops, try moving them to your pantry or another bookshelf. A cookbook stand can provide a designated space for the cookbooks you’re currently using, keeping them handy without occupying valuable counter space.

Simplify Decor

In smaller kitchens, it’s best to avoid cluttering countertops with decorative items. Opt for décor that also serves a practical purpose, such as clear canisters for storing essentials. This way, your kitchen can remain both stylish and functional.

Clear countertops make cooking and cleaning up much more efficient. Need more help organizing your kitchen? Schedule a free consultation call to get started!
