Does it ever feel like your clothes are multiplying overnight? Laundry seems to never end, and your closet is bursting at the seams. If you’ve been staring at a chaotic mess of clothes wondering where it all went wrong, it’s time to hit the reset button. Here are 5 simple yet effective tips to help you organize your closet and maintain a space where you actually want to get dressed.

Be Honest About Your Space (and Your Wardrobe)

Let’s face it: we all have limited closet space. If your closet is overflowing, it’s likely that your wardrobe has outgrown the space. Start by purging at least 50% of your clothes—yes, half. Keep only what you love and wear regularly. The key is quality, not quantity. When you embrace this, you'll find you have more room for what truly matters.

Maximize Your Space: Use What You’ve Got

When organizing your closet, it’s important to make the most of the space you have. If you have plenty of hanging space, use it! Hang shirts, dresses, and anything that wrinkles easily. But if your dresser offers more room, then take advantage of it by folding items like tshirts, sweaters, or pajamas. The goal is to match your clothing storage to your space—folding can save room in a small closet, while hanging might keep things more accessible in a larger one. Work with what you’ve got to keep things neat and functional!

Seasonal Rotation: Out With the Old (Seasonally)

If you have a smaller closet, consider rotating your wardrobe seasonally or based on occasion like formals or costumes (yes I have a costume closet!). Utilize coat closets or guest room closets to store out-of-season items. You can also utilize labeled bins or vacuum-sealed bags. Just make sure you have space to store them! Seasonal swaps allow you to focus on what’s relevant right now while making room for fresh pieces when the weather changes.

Get Rid of Guilt—Keep What Makes You Feel Amazing

Let go of the clothes that no longer serve you. Don’t keep that expensive blouse you only wore once or that gift you feel guilty about donating. Ask yourself: Does this make me feel fabulous? If not, it’s time to part ways. Keeping items that no longer bring you joy only clutters your space and mind.

Create Order by Color and Category

A tidy closet is a happy closet. Group your clothes by type—tops, pants, dresses—and sort them by color. This not only looks aesthetically pleasing but also helps you see what you really have (and what you don’t need more of!). You’ll be surprised by how much easier it is to find exactly what you’re looking for when everything is organized.

Organizing your closet doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With these tips, you’ll not only make the most of your space but also create a wardrobe you’ll love to wear every day.
