How to Get Your Home Organized Before the Holidays

The holidays have a way of making everything feel a little fuller.

Your calendar fills up. Your pantry fills up. Guests come and go. Gifts enter the house.

Decorations come out of storage. And suddenly, the spaces that felt perfectly manageable a few weeks ago are working overtime.

That's why one of our biggest pieces of advice for holiday home organization is simple:

Don't wait until the holidays are here to start preparing your home for them.

Getting organized before the season gets busy gives you time to create space, tackle the projects you've been putting off, and set up systems that will actually support you through the months ahead.

And no, that doesn't mean you need to start decorating for Christmas in September (even though we won't judge!) 😉

It simply means getting ahead now so you can spend less time managing your home later and more time actually enjoying the season.

Start With How You'll Use Your Home This Holiday Season

Before you start pulling everything out of closets or ordering organizing products, think about what the next few months will actually look like for your family.

  • Are you hosting Thanksgiving?

  • Will overnight guests be staying with you?

  • Do you entertain frequently throughout the season?

  • Will you be traveling?

  • Are you expecting an influx of toys and gifts?

Your priorities should reflect your plans.

If you're hosting a big holiday meal, the kitchen and pantry may deserve your attention first.

If family is coming to stay, that guest room that's been doubling as storage all year might finally need a reset.

You don't need to organize your entire home before the holidays. You need to organize the spaces that will make your holiday season easier.

Make Room Before More Comes In

The holidays bring a surprising amount of stuff into our homes.

Gifts. Food. Décor. Packages. Toys. Hosting supplies. School crafts. Extra coats.

All those Amazon boxes...

Creating some breathing room before that happens can make a huge difference.

This is a great time to look through the areas that tend to accumulate clutter and ask:

  • Do we still use this?

  • Does this need to live here?

  • Would I rather have the item or the space?

  • Is there something we can donate before the holidays?

We're not talking about a whole-home decluttering marathon. Even intentionally editing a few high-traffic spaces can give your home room to handle everything that's coming.

If you're ready for a deeper declutter, we've already put together a room-by-room guide in The Pre-Holiday Purge: Clear the Clutter Before the Chaos. It's a great place to start if you know your home needs a little editing before hosting season.

Prioritize the Spaces Your Guests and Your Family Will Actually Use

It's easy to start noticing everything you'd like to change when you know people are coming over.

Resist the urge to organize the linen closet nobody opens while your kitchen counters are covered in clutter.

Instead, focus on the spaces that will make the biggest difference in how your home functions.

The Kitchen + Pantry

Holiday cooking, baking, entertaining, and grocery shopping can quickly overwhelm a kitchen that isn't functioning well.

Before hosting season, clear expired food, group like items together, make frequently used ingredients easy to reach, and create some open space for the extra groceries that inevitably arrive.

The Entryway

More people usually means more shoes, bags, coats, and things coming through the door.

A simple drop zone and a little breathing room can prevent your entryway from becoming the holiday catch-all.

Guest Spaces

If your guest room has slowly become the place where everything without a home goes... you're in good company.

Give yourself plenty of time to clear the room, address the items you've been avoiding, and create a welcoming space without doing it all the night before someone arrives.

Everyday Living Spaces

You don't need a picture-perfect living room. You need one where your family and friends can comfortably gather.

Removing excess clutter and making everyday items easy to put away can go a long way.

Create Systems for the Things That Always Create Holiday Clutter

Some holiday chaos is predictable, which means we can plan for it.

Think about what usually piles up in your home this time of year.

  • Incoming packages?

  • Create a designated place for deliveries and boxes.

  • Gifts?

  • Choose a hidden area for gifts and wrapping supplies before you start shopping.

  • Holiday cards?

  • Decide where they'll be displayed or collected.

  • Extra food?

  • Leave room in your pantry instead of filling every available inch before the season begins.

  • Coats and bags?

Make space in your entryway or coat closet before guests arrive.

The goal isn't to prevent your home from ever getting messy. It's to make the mess easier to manage.

That's the difference a good organizing system can make.

Don't Forget About What's Coming After the Holidays

This is one of the reasons we love organizing before the holidays.

You're not just preparing for guests. You're also making January easier.

If you declutter toys before new ones arrive, there's somewhere to put Christmas gifts.

If you edit your holiday décor while you're pulling it out, you won't have to store things you didn't even use.

If your pantry has clear categories, putting away leftover entertaining supplies becomes much simpler.

If every item has a home, resetting after a busy weekend doesn't require another major organizing project.

A little preparation now can make both the holiday season and the transition out of it feel much smoother.

The Best Time to Organize for the Holidays Is Before It Feels Urgent

We see this every year.

The holidays feel far away... until suddenly they aren't.

Then you're balancing school events, travel plans, gift shopping, hosting, decorating, cooking, and all the everyday responsibilities that didn't disappear just because it's the holiday season.

That's why we encourage our clients to think ahead.

If you already know you'd love to have your pantry organized before Thanksgiving, your guest room ready before family arrives, or that overflowing closet handled before another busy season begins, you don't have to wait.

Getting it done now means it's one less thing hanging over your head later.
